(Finished December 14th, 2023) Part 5 of Rolling Stone’s The 200 Best Songs of the 80s: Songs 149 to 138

Hello,

Rolling Stone has released another Top 200 Best 80s songs list, however for some reason there are only 199 songs? I’m going to post the songs from 199 to 181 and review. I’m not a big fan of Rolling Stone’s rankings as they include songs that I’ve never heard of or songs that were only popular to a very select group of people. My Top 200 80s songs would look completely different. (Updated I checked Rolling Stone’s website and it seems there’s 200 songs now.)

With MTV at its peak and radio stations playing multiple genres back in the day, if I had never heard of a song it’s truly obscure. I have neither heard of the song or artist for songs 188, 186 and 181. That’s three songs and bands that I had never heard of before today.

One of those songs I hadn’t realized I heard it until just playing it. Not the greatest McCartney song, but in the 80th percentile. I suggest that “No More Lonely Nights”, “Coming Up” and “Spies Like Us” are all more suited for this spot. 149) Paul McCartney “Here Today”:

Bonus songs “Coming Up”:

And just because I like this goofy song I’m going to include it “Spies Like Us”. Sadly the movie isn’t very good.

Taylor Dayne had a very successful 1987 to 1990, releasing several great songs. Then like what happens to so many she seems to have completely disappeared. 148) Taylor Dayne “Tell It To My Heart”:

Bonus song: Taylor Dayne’s “Don’t Rush Me”:

Never have heard of this song before this, but I like very much how it starts. If I hadn’t been watching this video I would have sworn the singer was David Bowie. Okay I will give this one to Rolling Stone, this is a pretty cool song. 147) Sisters of Mercy “This Corrosion”:

Erasure has 10 plus classic songs, this is one of them. 146) Erasure “A Little Respect”:

Never have heard of this song before this. I know that Shane MacGowan recently died, R.I.P. Shane. Again it’s another one of those songs that’s decent, but nowhere near the top 200 songs of the 80s. 145) The Pogues “The Body Of An American”:

Lionel Richie left the Commodores in 1982, still the Commodores kept on going. They still had enough talent to create this late career masterpiece. 144) The Commodores “Nightshift”:

Another one of those overrated dinosaur acts that Rolling Stone seems to love so much. 143) Lou Reed “New Sensations”:

Bonus song: This is the “New Sensation” that Rolling Stone should have featured, INXS:

“It must have been love, but it’s over now.” That’s a line from Roxette’s “It Must Have Been Love”, one of the greatest ballads of all-time. I think that song should be here rather than “The Look”. However this song is also very good. 142) Roxette “The Look”:

Bonus song: “It Must Have Been Love”:

141) Fleetwood Mac “Gypsy”:

140) Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton “Islands In The Stream”:

The next two songs are bonus songs. Dolly Parton’s best 80s song, “9 to 5”:

Kenny Rogers best 80s song “Through The Years”:

Quite likely one of the most overrated bands of all-time. Dinosaur Jr.’s best song is “Start Choppin’”. This is yet another song I’ve ever heard. 139) Dinosaur Jr. “Freak Scene”:

Bonus song: “Start Choppin’”:

Quite deserving of a spot on this chart. 138) Kim Carnes “Bette Davis Eyes”:
