Hello,
What makes a song powerful. A few reasons why, but not all, obviously the music is powerful- see the “Phantom of the Opera” “Overture”. The message is powerful- see Bruce Springsteen’s “The Rising”, Lauren Daigle’s “Still Rolling Stones”, or Terry Jacks “Seasons In The Sun”.
Or a song can be powerful in it’s message like The Chicks “Not Ready To Make Nice”.
A song can also have a powerful vocal, like Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” or her almost as powerful “Success Has Made A Failure of Our Home”. Of course that would include Aretha’s “Respect” or Frida’s “I Know There’s Something Going On”.
Or a song is just powerful from a combination of many things. Or a song that can be powerful because of the way it makes you feel.
From the excellent musical “Come From Away”. You have to listen to the entire Broadway cast recording to realize how powerful this song is. 1) “Something’s Missing”:
2a) Bruce Springsteen “The Rising”:
2b) Bruce Springsteen “The Rising” (Live)”:
3) Lauren Daigle “Still Rolling Stones”:
4) Colm Wilkinson “Who Am I”:
5) “Overture” of “The Phantom of the Opera”:
6) Whitesnake “In The Still of the Night”:
7) Carly Simon “Nobody Does It Better”:
8) Pam TIllis “Maybe It Was Memphis”:
9) The Commodores “Still”:
One of the greatest and most powerful ballads ever. I also love the lyric “it must have been love, but it’s over now.” 10) Roxette “It Must Have Been Love”:
11) I Prevail and Delaney “Everytime You Leave”:
I can see Andrew Lloyd Webber saying to Sarah, “Sarah how long can you hold a note”. Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford 12) “The Phantom of the Opera”:
13) Shontelle “The Impossible”:
14) James Taylor “Fire and Rain”:
The music, the message and the feeling of this song are all powerful. And Tawny Kitaen isn’t too bad either. 15) Whitesnake “Here I Go Again”:
16) Meat Loaf “Things In The Mirror May Be Closer Than They Appear”:
17) Scandal featuring Patty Smyth “The Warrior”:
