(Finished July 31st, 2025) Part 11 of Rolling Stone’s 200 Best Songs of the 80s: Songs 54-42

Hello,

Rolling Stone has released another Top 200 Best 80s songs list. I’m going to post the songs from 200 to 1 and review each song. Is it worthy of it’s ranking, is it too high and is it too low. I’m not a big fan of Rolling Stone’s rankings as they include songs that I’ve never heard of or songs that were only popular to a very select group of people. My Top 200 80s songs would look completely different.

With MTV at its peak and radio stations playing multiple genres back in the day, if I hadn’t heard a song then it’s truly obscure.

41-31, 30-21, 20-11, 10-1

These next two songs I’ve never heard of and shouldn’t even be ranked here. Hearing this song I still feel that way, but there’s isn’t anything wrong with this very funky song. 54) Funky 4 + 1 “That’s The Joint”:

53) The Pixies “Debaser”:

An absolutely amazing song, but probably overrated on this list. However it definitely belongs on this list. One of the 80s country songs that broke out into popular consciousness, deservedly so. 52) Rosanne Cash “Seven Year Ache”:

51) Eddy Grant “Electric Avenue”:

50) Metallica “Master of Puppets”:

Another song I’ve never heard but I like this song. 49) Chaka Khan “Papillon (a.k.a. Hot Butterfly)”:

Should be in the Top Ten at least. This might be in the Top Ten songs of all-time. 48) The Human League “Don’t You Want Me”:

This isn’t even in the Top Ten Beastie Boys 80s songs. 47) Beastie Boys “B-Boy Bouillabaisse”:

Um no, just no. 46) King Sunny Ade “Ja Funmi”:

45) Salt-N-Pepa “Push It”:

44) The Jesus and Mary Chain “Just Like Honey”:

Sorry, but these guys are one of the most overrated bands ever. 43) Sonic Youth “Teen Age Riot”:

42) Shannon “Let The Music Play”:
