Hello,
Thanks to Billboard for this countdown.
Wow, this Hot 100 countdown is crazy. As this is late 1990, it’s not surprising that a lot of the 80s spills over into the 90s. But seriously how many boy bands did the early 90s really need. A lot of dance music from the 80s also showed up in the 90s. Also so called hair metal was still relatively prevalent on this chart. Little did the hair metal bands know that bands such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam are just around the corner.
So so many of these bands and songs I’ve never even heard of and I was listening to a lot of radio right around this time. A lot of these songs had limited impact and passed by as quickly as a summer day. The shelf life was only a few weeks for many of these songs. I think maybe 50 songs were memorable a few years later. And this may be because I’m old but only 35 or 36 of these songs would be remembered by anyone now. For people that weren’t born at the time only a few songs would be known by young people now. I think those songs would be Roxette’s “It Must Have Been Love”, Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby”, Madonna’s “Vogue”, Mariah Carey’s “Vision of Love” and likely that would be all. Roxette’s song is in “Pretty Woman” a movie that seems to have some longevity. Then “Vogue” and “Vision of Love” are two great songs sung by two of the most famous singers ever. My thought that “Ice Ice Baby” is still popular is because I hear it referred to still so many times and because of the novelty factor.

100) UB 40 “The Way You Do The Things You Do”:
After 1986’s “Rapture” Anita Baker seemed to be on her way to being a superstar. However after her 1988 song, “Giving You The Best I Got”, peeked at #3 her career faltered and that was pretty much it as a potential superstar. Oh but we always still have that one great CD “Rapture”. That’s one of the best CDs of the 80s. 99) Anita Baker “Talk To Me”:
Did hair metal musicians feel the end of their reign was on the way? Did they see any signs of that? Looking back I’m surprised the hair metal era lasted almost ten years. I say that as a hair metal fan. Motley Crue has always been one of my favorite bands and this is one of my favorite Motley Crue songs. I even saw them in concert for their first farewell tour. Is this the same room that’s in their video for “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn”? 98) Motley Crue “Don’t Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)”:
Dance music with guitars? This song is very genre confused and I don’t remember this song at all. It isn’t a surprise it had a short shelf life. 97) St. Paul “Stranger To Love”:
96) Deee-Lite “Groove Is In The Heart”:
95) Glenn Medeiros featuring Bobby Brown “She Ain’t Worth It”:
First of all, what is up with that outfit? It seems like this song should be called cookie cutter dance song #1. 94) Tyler Collins “Girls Nite Out”:
93) Roxette “It Must Have Been Love”:
Cookie cutter dance song # 2 92) Tiana “First True Love”:
Cookie cutter dance song # 3, but with boys. 91) The Party “Summer Vacation”:
90) Snap! “Ooops Up”:
89) Depeche Mode “Enjoy The Silence”:
The first several seconds of this song is so close to the start of The Smiths “How Soon Is Now”. And thankfully it’s not a cookie cutter dance song. 88) Soho “Hippy Chick”:
87) Motley Crue “Same Old Situation”:
86) Michael Bolton “When I’m Back On My Feet Again”:
85) Favorite Angel “Only Women Bleed”:
84) Ms. Adventures featuring Doug Lazy “Undeniable”:
